What are the Complications of Fibroids?
Transformation of uterine leiomyomas (benign) to uterine leiomyosarcomas (malignant smooth muscle tumors of the uterus) is extremely rare.
However, without pathologic examination of the uterus, this determination is not possible.
Uterine leiomyosarcomas are found in approximately 0.1% of women with leiomyomas and are reported to be more frequently associated with large or rapidly growing fibroids.
Therefore, surgical intervention may be undertaken in women with these types of tumors to rule out leiomyosarcoma, a rare but medically important lesion.
